OnlyFans in Switzerland: Taxes, AHV and Self-Employment

If you earn money with OnlyFans in Switzerland, you have to report it as taxable income and, as a rule, pay AHV/IV/EO contributions as a self-employed person. Whether you count as self-employed is decided by the AHV compensation office (Ausgleichskasse). VAT (MWST) only becomes mandatory from CHF 100,000 in annual turnover from services in Switzerland and abroad.

For many creators in Switzerland, OnlyFans is a serious side income or even their main income. After the first payouts, the same questions come up. Do I have to pay tax on it? Do I need to register as self-employed with the AHV? What about VAT? And how do I protect my privacy once authorities and registers are involved? This guide walks through the key points and links every legal statement to its official source.
One thing first: OnlyFans requires you to be at least 18 years old and states in its Terms of Service that creators alone are responsible for their taxes. According to those terms, creators who are not tax compliant risk restricted payouts or even account closure.
Do I have to pay tax on OnlyFans income in Switzerland?
Yes. OnlyFans earnings are income and belong in your tax return, whether you post on the side or full time. Switzerland taxes income at three levels: the Confederation, the canton and the municipality. How much tax you end up paying therefore depends heavily on where you live.
If you run OnlyFans as a sole proprietorship, you are taxed on your entire business and private income and assets as the owner. That is how the federal SME Portal describes it. There is no separate corporate tax; your OnlyFans profit becomes part of your personal taxable income.
What counts as income?
Everything you earn through the platform counts: subscriptions, pay-per-view messages, tips and paid custom requests. According to its Terms of Service, OnlyFans keeps 20% of every fan payment as its fee. Decide once, together with a professional, which amounts you book as revenue and which as expenses, and then stick to that method.
Which costs can I deduct?
As a self-employed person you can claim costs that are business related. Typical examples are equipment, software, outfits and props for shoots, or fees for service providers. What matters is that you can document every expense and separate private from business use. The Canton of Zurich tax office, for example, uses supplementary form A for self-employed persons, where private shares are also corrected.
Am I self-employed with OnlyFans?
You do not decide that yourself; the AHV compensation office does. According to the official AHV/IV information sheet 2.02 (as of 1 January 2026), you are self-employed if you work in your own name and for your own account, are independent and carry your own economic risk. The compensation office assesses each case individually, based on the economic reality rather than on what a contract says.
The information sheet lists several indicators of self-employment:
- You present yourself externally with your own brand and issue invoices in your own name.
- You carry your own economic risk, finance your own equipment and bear the risk of non-payment.
- You decide yourself when and how you work and whether you pass work on to others.
- You work for several clients.
How to apply for recognition as self-employed
To be recognised as self-employed, you file an application with an AHV compensation office. The portal selbststaendig-erwerbend.ch guides you through the application step by step and explains which documents you can attach. Expect the review to take some time, because the office builds an overall picture of your activity.
For a sole proprietorship this recognition is a prerequisite. The SME Portal states that the owner must be recognised as self-employed by the social insurance system and that this recognition is requested from the competent compensation office at the place of business.
How high are AHV/IV/EO contributions for OnlyFans creators?
As a self-employed person you pay the full AHV, IV and EO contributions yourself; there is no employer share. According to information sheet 2.02, the full rate is 10.0% of earned income. A sliding scale applies to lower incomes.
| Annual earned income | AHV/IV/EO contribution 2026 |
|---|---|
| below CHF 10,100 | minimum contribution CHF 530 per year |
| CHF 10,100 to below 17,600 | 5.371% |
| CHF 28,000 to below 30,500 | 5.864% |
| CHF 40,500 to below 43,000 | 6.976% |
| CHF 58,000 to below 60,500 | 9.321% |
| from CHF 60,500 | 10.0% (AHV 8.1%, IV 1.4%, EO 0.5%) |
The table shows an excerpt; the complete scale with all intermediate steps is in the information sheet. On top of this, compensation offices charge administrative cost contributions of at most 5% of the contributions.
Does this also apply to a side income?
Yes, if you run OnlyFans alongside a job, you are generally liable to pay contributions too. The information sheet names one exception: if your annual income from self-employment as a side activity is no more than CHF 2,500, contributions are only collected at your request. If you have already paid the minimum contribution through your salary, you may be able to ask that only the lowest rate is applied to a very small side income.
How and when do I pay?
The compensation office first sets provisional contributions based on your expected income. You pay them quarterly, at the latest ten days after the end of each quarter. The office later calculates the final contributions based on your tax assessment and invoices or refunds the difference. If your income rises significantly, tell the office, otherwise default interest of 5% per year may apply. That is what information sheet 2.02 says.
OnlyFans income often fluctuates a lot. Set aside a fixed share of every payout for taxes and social insurance so the final bill does not catch you off guard.
What about accident, unemployment and pension fund cover?
According to the information sheet, self-employed persons are not insured against unemployment, are not compulsorily insured against accidents and are not covered by mandatory occupational pension provision. You have to arrange this cover yourself. ch.ch offers a checklist of the insurance policies you should look into.
When do I have to charge VAT as an OnlyFans creator?
VAT liability in Switzerland does not start with the first franc. According to the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV), a business based in Switzerland becomes liable if it generates at least CHF 100,000 in turnover from services in Switzerland and abroad that are not exempt from VAT. If your annual turnover is likely to exceed this, you must register with the ESTV on your own initiative, as ch.ch explains.
With OnlyFans it is tricky to determine which amount actually counts as your turnover and to whom you supply your service for VAT purposes, the platform or the fans. That determines how you calculate and whether you reach the threshold. If you are getting close to CHF 100,000, have this checked by a professional before you cross the line.
| Threshold | What applies | Source |
|---|---|---|
| above CHF 2,500 side income | AHV/IV/EO contributions mandatory (below only on request) | AHV information sheet 2.02 |
| from CHF 10,100 income | sliding-scale contribution instead of minimum contribution | AHV information sheet 2.02 |
| from CHF 100,000 turnover | VAT liability, registration with the ESTV | ESTV, ch.ch |
| above CHF 100,000 turnover | commercial register entry mandatory for sole proprietorships | SME Portal |
| from CHF 500,000 turnover | full commercial bookkeeping instead of simplified accounts | SME Portal |
Payouts in USD: how do I convert to Swiss francs?
According to its Terms of Service, OnlyFans processes all fan payments and creator earnings in US dollars. Your bank or e-wallet may charge conversion fees, which OnlyFans does not control. How payouts work and which problems are typical is covered in our guide to OnlyFans payouts.
For tax purposes, the amount in francs is what counts. The ESTV and all cantonal tax administrations assess taxes in Swiss francs, so income in a foreign currency must be converted. The ESTV publishes daily exchange rates and annual average rates for this. The simplest approach is to record each payout with the franc amount actually credited to your account and to use one conversion method consistently.
What kind of bookkeeping do I need?
As long as your sole proprietorship has less than CHF 500,000 in turnover, simplified bookkeeping is sufficient according to the SME Portal. It must cover income, expenses and your financial position. That sounds simple, but it takes discipline:
- Download the earnings overview from your OnlyFans dashboard regularly and save it.
- Use a separate bank account that only receives OnlyFans payouts.
- Collect every receipt digitally and assign it to a month.
- Note private shares, for example if you also use your phone privately.
In the Canton of Zurich you submit supplementary form A together with signed statements of assets and liabilities, income and expenses and private withdrawals with your tax return. That is described in the information sheet of the Zurich cantonal tax office. Other cantons use similar forms; you will find the details on your cantonal tax office's website.
How do I protect my privacy?
Many creators work under a stage name and do not want their legal name linked to their account. The authorities will of course know about your activity; that is mandatory. In public registers, however, there are a few points you should know about.
Commercial register and UID register
According to the SME Portal, a sole proprietorship must be entered in the commercial register if it is run as a commercial business and its annual turnover exceeds CHF 100,000. Registration costs around CHF 120. Because the entry is in your name, anonymity is not possible, and the business name must include your surname. Even without a commercial register entry, sole proprietorships are published in the UID register, usually with first and last name.
Think early about the name you choose for your business. A neutral addition describing your field, such as content or media, is often more discreet than a reference to the platform. The name must still be truthful and must not be misleading.
Privacy on the platform
What you reveal yourself matters at least as much. Our guide OnlyFans without showing your face shows how to run OnlyFans with as few personal traces as possible. And if content appears somewhere it should not, our article on OnlyFans leaks will help.
Step by step: how to start properly in Switzerland
- Open an OnlyFans account and complete age verification (18+).

Is an agency worth it for creators in Switzerland?
No agency can take taxes and AHV off your hands; you remain responsible for them. An OnlyFans agency can, however, take over work on growth, chatting and marketing so you have more time for content. FEM Management has been supporting creators since 2022 with a focus on German-speaking markets, including Switzerland. You can find all our services on the OnlyFans management page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay tax on OnlyFans in Switzerland even if I earn very little?
Yes, all income belongs in your tax return. Whether tax is actually due depends on your total income, your deductions and your canton. For AHV, contributions on side income of up to CHF 2,500 per year are only collected at your request.
Which compensation office is responsible for me?
You file your application for recognition with an AHV compensation office. The official portal selbststaendig-erwerbend.ch guides you through the application step by step and shows you where to submit it.
How much AHV do I pay with OnlyFans?
From CHF 60,500 annual income, the rate is 10.0%. Below that, a sliding scale starting at 5.371% applies; below CHF 10,100 you pay the minimum contribution of CHF 530. Administrative costs of at most 5% of the contributions are added.
Do I have to charge VAT for OnlyFans?
You only become liable for VAT once you generate at least CHF 100,000 in turnover from services in Switzerland and abroad. Have the VAT treatment of your supplies to the platform and fans checked before you reach that threshold.
Will my name become public if I become self-employed?
Sole proprietorships appear in the UID register, and from CHF 100,000 in turnover an entry in the commercial register under your name is mandatory.
Can I declare my income in dollars?
No, taxes are assessed in francs. Convert every payout to CHF, ideally using the amount credited to your account or the ESTV exchange rates.
Does FEM Management do my tax return?
No. We are an OnlyFans management agency and take care of growth, marketing and chatting. For taxes and social insurance, it is best to work with a fiduciary. We are happy to answer questions about working together via our contact form.
