Few jobs around OnlyFans are searched for as often as chatter roles. The idea is appealing: work from anywhere, set your own schedule, earn money by writing. At the same time, many dubious offers are circulating. What does an OnlyFans chatter do?

In day-to-day work this mainly means:

• Looking after fans: You reply personally, remember preferences and build a relationship that feels genuine to the fan.

Is an OnlyFans chatter the same as a chat moderator?

Not quite. "Chat moderator jobs" are often advertised for dating or flirting platforms too. As an OnlyFans chatter you work for a specific creator on a subscription platform, and your goal is to build long-term fan relationships and sell content. The way of working is similar, but the context and requirements are not always the same. Read job ads carefully.

What skills do I need?

Formal qualifications are rarely required. These points matter more:

• Being an adult: You work with adult content. OnlyFans itself requires all users to be at least 18, as stated in its Terms of Service.
• Language: For the German-speaking market you need excellent written and spoken German. At FEM, fluent German and English are required for the chatter role.
• A feel for writing: You adapt to different tones, stay charming and notice when a conversation is going the wrong way.
• Sales sense: You recognise buying signals without being pushy.
• Discretion: You treat fan data and content confidentially.
• Reliability: Shifts must be covered, otherwise paying fans are left waiting.
• Equipment: A stable internet connection and your own computer are usually required.

What does the working model look like?

Chatting is almost always remote work. At FEM Management the chatter role is 100% remote. The team works fully location-independently and meets at workations and team events, for example in Bangkok. Because fans write at all hours, agencies often work in shifts so an account is covered around the clock. FEM has a German-speaking 24/7 chatting team.

Expect to work with chat software that bundles several accounts and stores notes on fans.

Employed or freelance: what applies legally?

Chatters are engaged in different ways in practice. For you this makes a big difference in terms of social security, taxes and predictability. The following overview refers to Germany.

Sources: minimum wage and mini-job limit according to the German Federal Government. According to the same source, the minimum wage will rise to EUR 14.60 and the mini-job limit to EUR 633 on 1 January 2027.

When are you bogusly self-employed?

Many chatter jobs are advertised as freelance. What matters, however, is not what the contract says but how the work is actually done. The German Pension Insurance (DRV) lists, among others, these indicators of bogus self-employment:

• You must follow all instructions of the client without restriction.
• You must deliver detailed reports at short, regular intervals.
• You must use specific hardware and software that allows the client to monitor you.
• You carry no business risk of your own and cannot organise your working time freely.

Fixed shifts, prescribed tools and reporting are typical in chatting, so it is worth taking a close look. If you are unsure, you can have your status clarified bindingly by the DRV clearing office. The status determination procedure is free of charge, takes three months on average and is also possible before you start working.

And as a freelancer?

How much does an OnlyFans chatter earn?

We will be honest here. There are no official statistics on chatter pay, and figures from forums or ads are hardly comparable because hourly pay, revenue share and bonuses are combined in different ways. Only the floor is reliable: as an employee in Germany you have been entitled to at least EUR 13.90 gross per hour since 1 January 2026. At 20 hours a week, that is roughly EUR 1,200 gross per month (13.90 × 20 × 4.33 weeks).

What is possible beyond that depends on the model. At FEM, team members receive performance-based pay in addition to their base salary, based on actual performance rather than hours alone. Ask every employer specifically:

• How high is the fixed component per hour or month?
• How is the variable component calculated and when is it paid?
• Are there minimum hours, and what happens during quiet shifts?
• Who pays for software and hardware?

Be wary of ads that promise very high sums without explaining the calculation.

How do I recognise reputable employers?

Chatter jobs attract scammers because they are remote, quick and often offered via messenger. The German consumer advice centre Verbraucherzentrale warns about job scams: reputable companies do not ask for a video identification procedure or for a bank account to be opened before an employment contract is signed, and you should not send ID copies or bank details via chat or email. The German police crime prevention service advises being sceptical of unexpected job offers and not accepting jobs via messenger or SMS.
